Mechanism Of Action Of Paracetamol, Chlorpheniramine, Pseudoephedrine & Caffeine
- Paracetamol acts on the hypothalamus to produce an antipyretic effect, as fever develops when the hypothalamus is set to a higher-than-normal temperature.
- Paracetamol may work peripherally to block pain impulse generation; may also inhibit prostaglandin synthesis in CNS
- H1 histamine receptor antagonist; competes for H1-receptor sites in target cells in the respiratory tract, blood vessels, and gastrointestinal tract.
- Chlorpheniramine is a sedative first-generation antihistamine
- Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic with a mixed mechanism of action, direct and indirect.
- Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant used for reducing nasal congestion caused by allergies or the common cold.
- Pseudoephedrine causes blood vessels in the nasal passages to shrink (vasoconstrictor).
- Vasoconstriction reduces nasal congestion by preventing fluid from draining from blood vessels into nasal passages.
- Caffeine acts as a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant, people usually take it to feel more alert and energetic.
- Caffeine can improve mood and help people feel more productive. It is believed to work by blocking the neurotransmitter adenosine’s receptors, increasing excitability in the brain.
